Who’s behind the tools at HURST Jaws of Life? It’s people who are committed to serving, like Chip Johnson.

The mid-Atlantic regional sales manager and HURST national law enforcement specialist draws on 22 years of emergency response experience, from law enforcement to fire rescue and EMS. Chip’s experience is the perfect fit for HURST rescue tools and the expansive first responder community they serve.

As a volunteer for the Chappaqua Fire Department in New York, Chip found his passion for public service and soon became a federal firefighter for the U.S. Coast Guard on Governor’s Island in Manhattan. For the next chapter of his career, he remained a first responder, but this time with the guys in blue. He gained law enforcement experience as a police officer in Hillsboro, North Carolina, before joining the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Police, where he managed the training division.

Chip reflects on a specific life-saving incident from his firefighter days. In 1986, he was called to the scene of head-on collision that left a vehicle pinned in a tree. He arrived at the site to see three high school students trapped and in need of immediate rescue. With phenomenal patient care from EMS teams and very careful extrication with HURST Jaws of Life tools, three lives were saved. To this day, Chip remains friends with one of the patients he saved.

“As a police officer, firefighter or EMS technician, you trust your team and you trust your equipment,” Chip said. “My experiences and trust in the HURST Jaws of life products led me to work behind the tools.”

Chip joined the HURST Jaws of Life team to build and grow awareness of StrongArm, a portable multi-tool designed for firefighters, but quickly became well suited for law enforcement. The StrongArm LE specialist educates the industry on how to use one tool to breach doors with ease, cut through rebar/security bars in a snap, break locks without a problem and pry open car doors in an instant. He also manages fire products in southern New England, and he’s become a familiar face at national trade shows, from the fire industry’s FDIC to law enforcement’s National Tactical Officers Association Conference.

“When you’re traveling and spending time with other industry experts, it’s important to enjoy your surroundings,” Chip said. “Without a doubt, my favorite thing about my job is working with the people of public service. We exchange stories, share life moments and learn about new innovations. These are just my kind of people.”

When he’s not demonstrating how StongArm is one tool first responders shouldn’t be without, he’s getting to know the unique individuals in the field. We’re glad Chip’s on our team to help law enforcement officers break through barriers in the field, and is part of an amazing team of employees across the U.S. that helps us continually make breakthroughs in the industry. #BehindTheTools
