Who’s behind the tools at HURST Jaws of Life? It’s a quality team, literally. Quality Technician Ivan Mejia is one of those guys who just can’t follow the advice of people who say you should leave your work at the office when you go home.

 “When I’m not at work, I think about work. It’s hard to leave it at work when you’re doing something so important,” he said. “Your best ideas come at the worst time. I keep a notebook right beside my bed so I can write my ideas down.”

 Ivan can’t stop thinking about work, and he won’t stop expanding his knowledge. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years on the USS Kauffman, a guided missile frigate like what you see in the movies. Its job? Hunt for submarines. Ivan was a flight deck crewman and gained experience as an aviation mechanic, which sparked an interest in engineering. As a member of the Navy Reserve, he studied engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte until he took a design class during his junior year that ignited his passion for machining. He transferred to a technical community college near HURST’s headquarters in Shelby, N.C. He is now pursuing a degree in manufacturing technology, while by day he inspects, troubleshoots and looks for ways to improve the parts that go into HURST Jaws of Life rescue tools.

I would describe myself as a people person that pays attention to detail and takes pride in what they do – whatever they do.

 So whether it’s ensuring the quality of today’s HURST Jaws of Life rescue tools or jotting down ideas of how the quality, procedures or training can be better for the future, Ivan is working for all of us – from the folks who use the tools to the vehicle passengers who may someday be rescued by them.
